United States Encased Stamps

United States Encased Postage Stamps are a unique and historically significant category of collectibles that emerged during the American Civil War era, specifically around 1862-1863. Created in response to a severe shortage of coins, these items combined postage stamps and currency. Each encased postage stamp consists of a regular U.S. postage stamp enclosed in a small, sturdy brass frame. This frame is sealed with a clear mica window, allowing the stamp to be visible while protecting it.

The face value of the encased postage stamp represented the monetary value of the encasement, with denominations typically ranging from one cent to several cents. The back of the encasement often featured advertisements from the issuing business, adding a unique commercial aspect to these items.
